Saturday Book Readings

This one-hour workshop includes some basic instructions for sitting meditation and a look at five books on Zen meditation. The books include titles by renowned meditation teachers, including Thich Nhat Hahn, Taisen Deshimaru, Omori Sogen, Chogyam Trungpa, and Pema Chodron.

Topics of discussion include:

  • The technique of sitting meditation

  • Being in the "Now"

  • Opening to the Heart

  • The Buddha's teaching on breath meditation

The session opens with a three-minute meditation practice followed by reading from selected passages by the teachers as mentioned above and ending with a final two-minute meditation.

The Four Objects of Mindfulness

Meditating on the Body, The Feelings, The Mind, and The Phenomena are central to Mindfulness Meditation practice. The Four Objects, also known as The Four Foundations of Mindfulness are central to the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. First taught over 2,500 years ago, they are teachings on meditation that have survived with the least amount of change or interpretation from third parties. These were introduced on Saturday, May 6, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, to an international group of meditation practitioners as part of a series of Saturday morning workshops on the fundamentals of Mindfulness Meditation.

 

Making the Mind Calm and at Peace

This simple, 30-minute meditation class included two meditation techniques: focusing on positive affirmation related to full awareness of breathing and Still Point meditation.

 

Fundamentals of Mindfulness Meditation

This is the first of a series of Saturday workshops given during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects covered include the basic postures, breathing, mental focus and general advice for starting a personal mindfulness practice.

 

Basic Counting Breath and Positive Affirmation

This short practice focuses on the most fundamental breath practice of counting the breaths. Each cycle of breath is counted until ten cycles are completed and the practitioner returns to one and completes another cycle and so on for the duration of the practice. This session also include positive affirmation for peace and happiness.
